The much anticipated and talked about points system for drivers license is set to roll out by the end of this year. Ever since the card type license system was employed (by the Sheik & Zuma syndicate) this has been the future of the system.

It seems that each driver will start with 12 points and depending on the nature of the violation, the offender will be demerited. Drunk driving counts for 6 points, in case you are wondering.

Drivers will however be able to win these points back at a rate of 1 point every 3 concurrent months. So, it would take 18 months to win back the 6 points lost in drunk driving charge. Upon losing all 12 points, your license will be suspended.

As of now, the pilot project will be rolled out in Gauteng as early as mid-June. I’m still scratching my head as how this can be controlled only within the province, surely this must be a national roll out, as controlling movement of offenders between provinces is a bit like having your soup with a fork!
