Earth Hour Blogger Challenge!

Earth Hour is a WWF initiative designed to create awareness of the effect that Global Warming has on the world and highlights the fact that we can make a difference, even if its just by individuals putting off all the lights for 1 hour across the world.

In South Africa, Earth Hour will take place at 20:30 till 21:30 on the 28th March 2009. I don’t belong to any organization and I am not a Green Peace junky, but I am concerned about the effect that global warming will have on us and it bothers me that we, as individuals are so careless and ignore the problem.

Earth Hour needs as many people to sign up as possible, as they will use these names as part of a world wide petition in the fight to have policy adjustments made at world forums, like the UN meetings, etc.

I have signed up and I challenge as many of my readers as possible to sign up.

But my bigger challenge to the blogging world is simple. Replace your blog with a plain black screen for the duration of Earth Hour. Its a simple challenge, but I hope that it will be an effective one, if we can get as many bloggers to join in and help create awareness.

I will also ask that you bloggers post a small article explaining the challenge to your readers as a black screen alone will only create confusion and the blog post will generate the awareness.

Drop a link to your blog in the comments so that we can keep track of all those who have stepped up to the Earth Hour Blogger Challenge.

Is the black screen purely to coincide with the Earth Hour colour? I'm no electrician but I hear that a black screen on an LCD monitor uses more power - http://www.triplepundit.com/pages/askpablo-black-google.php

@onelargeprawn - I heard so. The Earth Hour official colour is black, so it only makes sense. I did consider green, but none of the official brand identity has green in it.

Slight correction to your post - Earth Hour is from 20:30 - 21:30 on 28th March rather than the 27th. But this blogger challenge is a great idea nonetheless!

Thanks for the heads up! That's great, the more awareness that we generate, the better! :)

@islandchic - I am fully aware of the impact that Global Warming will have on your country. I will do my best to create as much awareness as possible. My lights will be switched off!
