Google Maps for iPhone – iOS6 compatible!

So after the nightmare that is Apple Maps, Google have stepped up to the challenge of saving iOS6 users from terrible Maps experiences, by launching their own Google Maps app for iOS, which runs perfectly on iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

The Google Maps app, syncs with your Google account, allowing for seamless maps search history sharing between your desktop and other devices and the app. Offering free live traffic data and voice-guided turn-by-turn directions and best of all, the mobile app supports Streetview, Google Maps definitely shines as the best free mapping app for the iPhone once again. To Download the app, go to the app store via your device and search for Google Maps. Or you can get Google Maps for iOS from the App Store here.

After Tupacs resurrection recently at Cochella, it was only a matter of time until someone decided to bring Steve Jobs back. This is a parody video that had me laughing like a crazy person. It’s a pre-emptive video to today’s iPhone 5 announcement by the new CEO of Apple, Tim Cook.

Apple Store is offline!

I’m not sure what’s happening, but it seems that the Apple Store, which is hosted at http://store.apple.com is currently offline.

This usually happens when price drops are being implemented and when new products are being launched. My guess is that iPhone and iPod prices are being reworked in anticipation for the announcement of new devices early in September this year.

What do you think is up?

iPad 3 launch date in South Africa (SA) on April 27th

So it’s official. The South African launch date of the New iPad, also known as the iPad 3 to some, is scheduled for 27th April 2012.

No official pricing was included in the original press release, but based on Apple‘s trend, expect to pay exactly the same as the iPad2 price, and the iPad 2′s will become available at a discounted price.

How to fix the iOS5.1 download error problem!

So iOS5.1 launched last week and was available for immediate download. Many users have complained about an error when trying to use the SOFTWARE UPDATE feature on the iPhone for iOS5.1. This is a quick workaround that could resolve the problem as it did for me.

Open Settings > Wifi
Click on the little blue arrow on the right of the active connection name.
Go to DHCP > DNS
- My DNS setting was 10.0.0.2, but yours could be different.
Change this to either the Google DNS setting which is “8.8.8.8″
or use the open DNS setting which is “208.67.222.222″
Now go back to Settings > General > Software Update and try again.

This resolved the issue with my iPhone 4, which is now completely up to date with iOS 5.1

Samsung Galaxy S2 ad campaign mocks iPhone 4S!

Samsung has launched an attack campaign on Apple with their latest mock advert which does not explicitly mention the iPhone 4S, but does a good job of ripping Apple fanboys.

I must admit, even though I’m a huge Apple fan, I quite like the ad from Samsung.

How to download iOS5.0.1 and update your iPad or iPhone!

[UPDATE: How to download and update to iOS6 for iPhone, iPod and iPad!]

Apple has just released the latest update for iOS5 which is iOS5.0.1. It is available as an over the air update, which means that you don’t need to plug your iPhone or iPad into your laptop to get the update.

The total download size is 44MB, so I’d recommend doing the download via wifi, or via a data bundle.

To get the update, go to Settings > General > Software Update.

The update release notes are:

Fixes bugs affecting battery life
Adds Multitasking Gestures for original iPad
Resolves bugs with Documents in the Cloud
Improves voice recognition for Australian users using dictation

Remember to use iTunes 10.5 to do the update.

How to add emoticons to iPhone without Jailbreak!

It’s actually super easy to activate emoticons or emoji’s or smileys or whatever you’ll like to call them on an iPhone or iPad. It seems that Apple have set up a native “International Keyboard” dedicated to emoticons which houses a pretty extensive set of emoticons.

Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > International Keyboards

Click on “Add New Keyboard…” and select “Emoji”

Your QWERTY keyboard will now have an additional button next to the space bar as shown here:

If you click on it once, and your keyboard will switch over to the Emoji list or you can click and hold it to allow for a full list of the active keyboards to be displayed.

The list of emoticons are very comprehensive, but the tab with the clock, shows your last used set of emoticons, which is quite a handy feature if you tend to use the same set repetitively.

How to reject a call on iPhone! iPhone Tip

This is a very simple tip that would seem like an easy task, but at first glance is quite a tricky thing to figure out on your own if you are new to the Apple iPhone.

When you receive a call, you may MUTE the call, by pressing the button on the top of the iPhone just once.
To REJECT the call and divert the call straight to voicemail, press the button on the top of the iPhone twice in fairly quick succession.
